Congrats gentlement.

One area I'd like your thinking caps turned toward is the custom server.  I'm as bad as the next guy for never joining it when I see its empty.    But I certainly would join it if there was a half-dozen people there.   So can it become modestly and regularly populated?  Such that when one wants to play some DOD they could feel confident that there would be some good battles happening in the custom server (just like we know there will be folks playing at the Caen).   If such populating could be accomplished, Merrills custom server could become regarded as the only DOD custom server still standing.    Or, to paraphrase the Clash, "the only custom server that matters".

PostForum: 475th Mess Hall Posted: Sun Sep 23, 2018 2:18 am Subject: Re: Question for everyone concerning stats
I agree that stats are one of the things that differentiate this server and make it more popular.

I don't like the idea of regular resetting.   That over-emphasizes the idea of playing for stats.   In fact, people might think "why bother starting at Merrils right now because the stats are in mid-cycle", but do join in about two months when they are reset".

If we leave stats to simply accumulate over the years, then they tend to become valuable only as a indication of personal development. Since a regular players only playing a year just isn't going to catch a regular whose gathered stats for 5 years, overall top positioning becomes less significant and one can delve into stats for something other than overall top ten.   Indeed one can chart their personal growth and find some meaning in that.   They can, if so inclined, divide the 5 year's stats by 5, if they really want to see some sort of equivalence in actual time played, and thereby get some near accurate indication of how they measure up.   Or they can look at someone whose played 100 hours, and see how many points they had when they only had, like themselves currently, 12 hours played.  That sort of thing.  Or chart their personal k/d ratio and hopefully see it grow - due to all their camping...  Cool  Or watch their personal development using various weapons because using various weapons becomes a personal challenge rather than an impediment to accumulating top ten stats.

But semi-seriously...

I feel constant re-setting of the server stats (be it monthly, yearly, or quarterly) will undesirably increase many players ' goal of always trying to get oneself into the top 10.  Stats resetting reduces stats to a temporary (errrrr) status-indicator and over-values a top ten positioning.   Such emphasis on personal status vis-a-vis the stats positioning of others does not reinforce or encourage team play, in fact other players may just become a means to the end of stats accumulation.

I think the longer a particular set of stats remain growing, the less overall value they have in terms of individualizing the game into a constant race to the top.  Yet, by having them, and having them over time, stats will serve to positively differentiate these servers and enable players to track their personal development at these servers.   Both qualities are good and that's what I'd try to emphasize in terms of having stats.

Further motivation for being careful with my nade tosses.  And learning to use the mimi-map effectively.

Speaking of mini-map, they can be so misleading in multi-story buildings.   One hears footsteps, checks mimi-map and sees team mate's icon.  And one relaxes because the icon appears in the exact position nearby where the sound is heard.  False sense of security because one's team mate is actually one story below, or above.  Alas, the mini-maps isn't three dimensional, it doesn't show vertical.  Thus it actually is an enemy that one hears.  An enemy who is on the hunt in a dangerous place right nearby.  Outcome - shovel to the head.   Razz

Yes, Pete.   Toni, you confirmed Pete's thinking that bazookas don't make points for blowing walls, only satchels do.  It's all good.

Of course,   Very Happy    you also confirmed that I still don't really understand very much about how the points are accumulated.   Very Happy

That might be difficult... but... I'll give it a try.   Cool

Interesting topic.  I like the fact that Merrills' servers have stats, and now, as a result of this thread, I better understand how the stats work.

For example, I had no idea you received points for blowing a wall.   I can see the tactical value in blowing a wall, and if defensively they were guarded in a manner relatively equal to their stats value, then I could understand their point value.  As it is, they don't seem like such an accomplishment.  Yet, now I also understand why people grab bazookas right off and start firing away.   Wink

Aside:  a truer stats, imho, would certainly factor in time played as an influencing factor in one's ultimate individual skill score.   And, for sure, one's (and others') individual skills is something to enjoy, learn from, improve upon, etc. etc., without doubt.

Appreciate the non-debatable changes made.

For me, its always been about the Teamplay Win - combining my efforts with teammates' efforts and enthusiasm.
YaBaDaBaDooo!  that's what makes it burn bright for me, baby!   Shocked   Don't ya just love it when you can feel your teammates all pushing together, focused and really trying, to grab that final cap?

Even though my current PC is ten years old, I did have an older one, and with it I had no voice (and aren't I making up for that now, eh  Wink  )

Just a silly (ancient) possibility, but... do you have a sound card, or is it on-board sound?   Sometimes voice doesn't work with on-board sound chips.  I tried every dang and time-consuming fix that the internet offered.   But to no avail.  In the end, my unfixable former silence was as a result of that on-board sound chip.

And, when I turned the on-board chip off (through the BIOS) and put in a sound card, yow! I became a motor mouth.   Cool

Thx. Worked like a charm. Took a while after typing "agree" before there appeared a left side column with servers listed, but all good now.   Possibly I needed to refresh?

I can't get it working...

When i try the link Kaze posted in the ShoutBox I get "Invalid Invite - this invite might be expired or you might not have permission". However, it seems I'm logged in online in web browser. But, I can't find any way to log into the Merrrill's server on my browser page.

When I open Discord app from icon on homepage (which is what I prefer to use for game) I can't get past the "I'm not bot" captcha process. I get endless "click all boxes with signs" or roads, or cars, or storefronts, or... on and on and on until I'm told "We're sorry but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now".

I don't know.... don't have much hair to pull out. Laughing

And while I'm at it (revealing my computing illiteracy Razz ), do any others have problems doing copy/paste at this forum?

What about those of us with pre-2008 computers (anyone else?) ?

Can we expect any drag / lag / reduction in game performance with this voice tool running?

Or is it truly a minimal computer resources consuming device?

On May 3 I donated $20 US.   Don't know what the exchange rate from Canada is but am glad I can finally do it.   I'm not a money person  (but I am a materialist... I like to eat) and thus, never had a Pay Pal or a Credit Card.  However, I recently found out that my new bank card could be used online and thus, I'm donationable... or it that donation-do-able?

Thanks for info.

16 v 16 - Clerveaux - might be good, unfortunately never seen a custom server that full.

As for Caen, I find a full server a bit middle bottle-necked.

I know u know, but if we limit size to 6-8, we can proceed sooner, and i believe players find themselves a team-play roll.

Fun FuN FUN !!!   Looking forward to it too.   Glad to participate.

When it's said "16-24 players to get it going", does that mean sides will be limited to 12?  Or 8?  Just wondering  (and hoping).
